EU blocks Brazilian meat and honey

The European Union is temporarily suspending imports of animal products from Brazil. The measure takes effect on September 3 and covers products intended for human consumption. Brazil is not yet included on the required EU list. The European Commission confirmed this during a press briefing on September 1. The measure applies to animals and animal products intended for human consumption. The Commission specifically mentioned poultry, beef, and honey.

Requirements for antimicrobial use

Stricter conditions for imports into Europe take effect on September 3. Exporting countries must comply with European rules on antimicrobial use. These rules prohibit the use of antimicrobials as growth promoters.

Certain antimicrobials intended for human use may also not be administered to animals. Exporting countries must demonstrate compliance with these European requirements.

Many trading partners have now provided the requested guarantees. However, Brazil is not yet on the EU list of approved countries. Imports of the affected products are therefore temporarily suspended.

Audit of poultry and honey

European experts are currently conducting an audit in Brazil. The audit focuses on poultry and honey. It is expected to be completed by the end of this week. The experts will then compile their findings in a report.

The Commission has already received written guarantees covering poultry and honey. However, it requires guarantees covering the animals’ entire life cycle.

These guarantees are not currently available for beef. The European Commission remains in talks with the Brazilian authorities. It wants imports to resume as soon as possible.
