Visit Empack on 31 March, 1 and 2 April 2020

  • 10 February 2020

On 31 March, 1 and 2 April 2020 Jaarbeurs Utrecht will once again be the location for Empack. With a diversity of exhibitors in the field of material, technology, machines and packaging, a knowledge and conference programme and interesting workshops, the trade fair will present the dynamics of the total packaging chain.

Empack Netherlands has grown into the largest packaging trade fair in the Benelux. During this 18th edition 320 exhibitors will present their latest developments and innovations to the general public. Here visitors will find directly applicable solutions to current packaging issues.

The future of packaging

Empack's knowledge and conference programme revolves around current topics, such as CO2 offsetting and reduction, the use of renewable materials, food waste and the power of plastics. In collaboration with leading partners such as ABN AMRO, Brightlands Campus Chemelot, KIDV, NRK, EVMI and NVC, a high-quality programme has been developed with top speakers and experts. Each theme is extensively highlighted in the programme.

CO2 offsetting

On an annual basis we lose more than 10 billion trees. The consequences of this are too great to ignore. Packaging is necessary for a pleasant and liveable world, such as preventing food waste and simplifying efficient transport and logistics. But it is also material that still ends up in the environment as waste and continues to litter. The planting of trees jointly compensates for the CO2 emissions of the entire production chain. In cooperation with United Packaging Forest (UPF), Trees for All and PEFC Nederland, an attempt is being made to reduce the joint ecological footprint.

Seize the benefits of waste

Towards Zero Waste, that's the mission for the future. Just like many companies, Easyfairs, the organisation behind Empack, also considers sustainability of paramount importance. "We see waste as a material in search of a new destination. In cooperation with Renewi we recycle materials as much as possible into new end products," says Marketing Event Manager Michelle van Helvoirt. "By continuously keeping 'Towards Zero Waste' as our goal, we think much more consciously about our approach and purchasing. The dot on the horizon has been set, but we are doing it step by step. Also pick up the benefits of your business waste and discover on Empack how waste is converted into raw materials".

Food waste and safety

Food safety is and will remain an important topic of discussion. KIDV, among others, is shining its light on this. Making packaging(s) for food is not an easy task. Hygiene and food safety must be optimally safeguarded in order to guarantee people's health. It is therefore logical that there are strict rules for food packaging and the environment in which it is produced. What new food safety and quality challenges can the food industry expect in 2020? Where lie the opportunities for improvement?

Food for thought

KIDV and NRK kick off the fair on 1 and 2 April with the latest news and a delicious breakfast. The breakfast table is the informal spot where experts will be able to talk to each other in the morning. Under the guidance of a discussion leader, critical and interesting questions will be asked that guarantee lively discussions. In conclusion, there is a glimpse into the future; which trends are emerging, what will the industry look like in five years' time?

Kitchen of Materials

Taste and experiment in the Kitchen of Materials. In this kitchen all packaging ingredients come together and are processed into material. Suppliers of plastic, glass, paper, cardboard and metal centre here and show which applications the specific material is suitable for. In cooperation with 'People of Tomorrow' and supervised by material experts, you will receive independent material advice. In addition to People of Tomorrow, NRK and Brightlands Campus Chemelot also devote specific attention to materials, zooming in on the power of plastics and the development(s) of new types of plastics.

Design for Intended Use

NVC projects Design for Intended Use (DIU) for the environment and packaging for omni-channel retail. Now that companies like Amazon are on the verge of conquering the Netherlands as a market as well, it is important to take a good look at the market and follow the pressing trends and developments closely. During knowledge sessions, the following questions are discussed in more depth: "How can DIU support the responsible collection of emptied packaging? What information helps the consumer user to dispose of his/her packaging unambiguously after use?
