The NVWA and the Ministry of VWS are offering the Norwegian company Keep-It Technologies, in cooperation with a manufacturer, the opportunity to test a time and temperature indicator on food products for 24 months. This indicator replaces the current best-before date to indicate until when the food can be safely consumed. This is an important step forward on enabling dynamic best-before dates through smart sensor technology.
Consumers are expected to waste less food thanks to the indicator (read more about the consumer research around the Keep-It indicator here). The indicator will initially only be placed on fresh poultry meat. The NVWA has assessed that the indicator here indicates a reliable shelf life. During the trial, other foods may only be added after the NVWA has assessed that this is reliable and safe.
