Quarter more sales for organic products in 2022

  • 27 March 2023

Due to the growing supply of organic products, sales of organic products increased by 25% last year, according to new research by GfK (2023). 15% of the increase in sales was made up of increasing volume and 10% came from the average price increase due to inflation. Dutch households not only bought more, but also more often organic. Purchase frequency increased by +15%.

The main reason for buying organic is animal friendliness (84%), followed by the positive impact on the climate and soil quality (79%). The majority of consumers would buy organic even more often if it were cheaper (77%) or if an organic variant were available (35%), according to additional research by I&O (2023).

The absolute turnover of organic food increased by 25% to €1.4 billion in 2022. This makes 3.5% of total household FMCG sales organic. The absolute volume of organic also increased (15%), while the volume of non-organic fell. Despite increasing sales of both groups, organic sales grew faster.

The substantial increase in turnover of organic food is partly a result of the increasing supply. Earlier, supermarket PLUS decided to offer only organic drinking milk under its own brand. Last year, Albert Heijn switched to only organic wholemeal pasta. Supermarkets play an important role, as 73% of all organic products are bought in supermarkets.
