Smashburger gains popularity in the Netherlands

  • 28 May 2026

The cheeseburger remains the most ordered burger in the Netherlands. At the same time, the smashburger is gaining ground. This is evident from Uber Eats ordering data released in connection with World Hamburger Day. The smashburger (a thin, griddled burger) now ranks among the three most ordered burger varieties on the platform.

Cheeseburger remains the favorite

The cheeseburger tops the list of the most ordered burgers on Uber Eats, excluding McDonald’s. The bacon cheeseburger ranks second. The Smashburger Combo takes third place. The top five is rounded out by the Zinger Chicken Burger Box Meal and the Chicken & Burger Combo.

According to Uber Eats, the figures show that consumers are finding their way to new burger varieties alongside familiar classics.

Burgers often part of larger orders

The data shows that burgers are regularly ordered for multiple people at once. An average burger order through Uber Eats contains 4 to 5 burgers. The largest burger order of the past year consisted of 200 hamburgers.

“The cheeseburger remains a true classic, but at the same time we see that Dutch consumers are becoming increasingly curious about new flavors and food trends such as the smashburger. What stands out most is that burgers are increasingly becoming a shared dining occasion: whether for an evening with friends, family, or colleagues at the office,” says Aukeline Tolman, General Manager of Uber Eats.

Saturday most popular ordering day

According to Uber Eats, Saturday is the most popular day for ordering burgers. On that day, 17.4% of all burger orders are placed. Sunday follows with 16.9%, and Friday with 16.4%. Tuesday is the least popular day.

Most burgers are ordered around 7:00 p.m. Cola is the beverage most frequently ordered alongside them. Milkshakes and iced coffees are also regularly ordered with burgers. French fries remain the most popular side dish.

The order notes also reveal how specific some customer preferences can be. The longest order note of the year, containing more than 600 characters, focused on one subject: absolutely no pickles.
