Skal works with new risk model as of 2021

  • 21 December 2020

As of 2021 Skal Biocontrole works with a risk model to determine which supervisory arrangement a company falls into. In 2021 there are two arrangements for certified bio-companies: high risk and normal risk. Because the 10% of companies that fall under high risk also have to pay a higher rate, many companies wonder whether they fall under high risk.

What is risk?

If a chance is small, but the effect is large, there is a high risk. Conversely, if the probability is high, but the effect is small, the risk is still high.

Risk score

The risk model works with a risk score per company. The higher the risk score of a company, the higher the probability that the company falls in the highest 10%. The model works with multiple variables to arrive at a risk score. The organic turnover weighs heavily in the risk model, as does the amount and type of organic business activities. What also counts is whether a company combines organic and conventional production. For production companies it also weighs how many organic products are registered at Skal and whether that number has grown significantly lately. For farms, the number of dispensations issued counts in the risk score. And last but not least, of course, the deviation history of each company is taken into account. If these variables together determine the risk score of the company.

What does the high risk mean in practice?

The 10% of companies with the highest risk scores will be included in the High Risk supervisory arrangement in 2021. This supervisory arrangement means that these companies will receive two full inspections in 2021. In addition, the risk model will also be used for the sampling of unannounced inspections and for sampling. So in addition to the two full inspections, there is also a greater chance that Skal will come unannounced to check or take a sample of a plot or product if your company falls under the High Risk supervision arrangement. Finally, for the companies in the supervision arrangement High, also a higher rate applies.
