Azura Group: First tomato producer 100% CO₂-neutral

  • 18 December 2020

At the end of 2020, the Azura Group, one of the market leaders in fruit and vegetable production, will become the first tomato producer and supermarket supplier to achieve CO₂ neutrality for all its activities, from the farm to the consumer's plate.

This compensates almost 192,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. With the specially designed logo, this responsible way of production will become visible to the consumer on the packaging. The initiative is in line with Azura's long-term strategy: to offer consumers high-quality, accessible and environmentally friendly products.

Natural and unheated production

Since its foundation in 1990, the Azura Group has been using seasonal production processes with natural heat and sunlight, so no other source of energy is needed to heat the greenhouses.

As a result, Azura tomatoes naturally have a low ecological footprint: the total greenhouse gas emissions of an Azura tomato (from farm to fork, from the farm to the consumer's plate) amount to 1.26 kg CO₂/kg of tomato.

The life cycle analysis

In 2010, Azura started measuring its environmental impact using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method according to the international ISO standards 14040 and 14044, with the aim of improving agricultural practices. As a result, Azura's CO₂ emissions have been reduced by 20% over the past 10 years.

Unique logo

From December 2020, all of Azura's CO₂ emissions will be offset and from March 2021, this environmentally friendly commitment will be visible on all Azura tomato packaging sold in retail.

Azura's CO₂ neutrality will be recognized with a "100% carbon neutral" logo, informing consumers about Azura's environmental efforts. The logo is designed with Azura's "A" and a QR code. With one simple click, consumers gain access to relevant information on Azura's website. The QR code informs consumers about the projects supported by Azura, the CO₂ offsetting volume and all other actions Azura has taken to reduce its carbon footprint over the past 10 years.
