Falafel has evolved from traditional street food into a versatile product for professional kitchens. Schouten Europe responds to this development with the introduction of three new falafel varieties. The family-owned company from Giessen expands its existing range with distinctive flavors and colors, aimed at a wide range of applications within the B2B market.
Falafel originally comes from the Middle East and is based on legumes and herbs, most commonly chickpeas. Thanks to the combination of flavor, versatility, and growing interest in global cuisines, the product has gained popularity worldwide. Schouten Europe has supplied falafel in various formats for many years and has seen demand increase in recent years.
The new varieties have been developed for customers in retail, foodservice, QSR, and industry. Product Manager Annemiek Vervoort says: “Our new varieties have been developed for B2B customers in retail, foodservice, QSR, and industry. The falafels combine a legume-based foundation with distinctive flavor profiles and offer chefs, product developers, and consumers numerous opportunities for differentiated menus and concepts.”
Schouten introduces Falafel Harissa, Falafel Green Pea & Mint, and Falafel Beetroot. Each variety has a clearly defined flavor profile. “Falafel Harissa delivers a warm, spiced flavor with a mildly spicy character and contains lentils. Ideal for street food concepts and global cuisines. Falafel Green Pea & Mint is fresh, smooth, and aromatic. An accessible variety that fits perfectly within modern, lighter dishes. Falafel Beetroot stands out for its natural color and lightly sweet taste, immediately creating visual impact on the plate,” according to Vervoort.
The new falafel varieties are fully plant-based and developed with close attention to quality, texture, and flavor. The products carry a Nutri-Score A and are suitable for a wide range of applications, including wraps, bowls, burgers, and meal components. With this introduction, Schouten Europe reinforces its role as a partner in plant-based solutions for the professional market.
Schouten Europe began in 1990 as the first Dutch company to develop meat substitutes based on plant proteins. The company offers a broad and varied portfolio and supplies products, mainly under private label, in more than fifty countries. In addition, Schouten develops products based on specific customer requirements.
