Mobile slaughter unit for poultry

  • 28 August 2025

A mobile slaughter unit (MSU) is now available for small-scale poultry farmers in East and West Flanders. This certified unit allows farmers to carry out slaughter on their own premises and sell directly to consumers, retailers, or restaurants.

The MSU can process up to 750 chickens per day. As the animals don’t need to be transported, they remain calmer, which helps preserve meat quality. Farmers can book a day via the De Donderij calendar. The schedule is submitted to the FASFC at least one week in advance to meet legal inspection requirements.

A site visit takes place beforehand to set clear agreements, such as the use of a paved area out of public view, access to sanitary facilities, a changing room, and a refrigerated storage unit at 4°C. A separate office space with internet access is also required for the veterinarian. Neighbourhood impact must be considered: slaughtering is permitted between 6.00 and 22.00 without causing disturbance.

After slaughter, the poultry farmer receives the inspected carcasses, stamped with an EU approval mark. Farmers who don’t cut or sell the meat themselves can use the on-farm butchery service provided by De Donderij.

All waste is properly removed. Both wastewater and slaughter waste are handled in accordance with regulations.

For farmers looking to manage their supply chain independently, this mobile slaughter unit offers a practical and professional option.
