Enzymit and NIZO scale up enzyme production

  • 25 June 2025

A step forward for those aiming to produce enzymes in a sustainable and efficient way. NIZO and Enzymit have successfully enabled the large-scale production of novel enzymes—without using living cells. This technology offers an alternative to conventional biomanufacturing and responds to the growing demand for more sustainable production methods.

From lab to pilot plant

The scale-up was achieved at NIZO’s food-grade pilot facility in Ede. Enzymit developed a cell-free production platform capable of creating biomolecules, such as hyaluronic acid, without relying on cellular systems. By removing unnecessary steps from the process, bioproduction becomes faster, simpler and more cost-efficient.

Collaboration as a key factor

The partnership combined two areas of expertise: NIZO’s knowledge of protein expression and fermentation, and Enzymit’s focus on enzyme design and cell-free production. “We’re proud to help bring Enzymit’s platform closer to industrial application,” said Nikolaas Vles, CEO of NIZO.

Applicable across multiple sectors

The successful scale-up demonstrates that cell-free platforms are fit for industrial use. Applications can be found in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and other sectors where high-value biomolecules are essential. “Partnering with NIZO enabled us to move quickly from lab-scale to industrial production,” said Dr. Gideon Lapidoth, CEO and co-founder of Enzymit.
