EFSA increases focus on food safety in Europe

  • 21 April 2026

EFSA will relaunch the Safe2Eat campaign in April 2026. The European food authority is focusing on clear and science-based information for consumers. The goal remains to support people in making informed and safe food choices.

Campaign expands to 23 countries

Safe2Eat is now entering its sixth year. The campaign started with nine countries and will expand to 23 participating countries in 2026, both within and beyond Europe. EFSA is working closely with partners across multiple countries.

The 2025 edition showed a broad reach. According to an Ipsos survey from November 2025, 41% of citizens in the surveyed countries were reached. People who encountered the campaign reported paying more attention to food safety. They also thought more critically about their food choices and showed greater interest in the science behind them. In addition, the campaign helped strengthen trust in the European food safety system.

Focus on three themes

In 2026, Safe2Eat will focus on three key topics. The first theme addresses safe food practices. It emphasizes reading labels and the safe storage, handling, and preparation of products.

The second theme centers on food and health. EFSA provides information on balanced diets, nutritional needs, and health claims, including the science behind them.

The third theme covers what food contains. This includes additives, flavorings, novel foods, and allergen labeling.

Science translated into daily practice

According to EFSA Executive Director Nikolaus Kriz, the strength of the campaign lies in its practical relevance. “Every day, people make choices about what to eat, and they deserve to feel safe and informed.”

He emphasizes that Safe2Eat translates scientific knowledge into practical guidance for everyday use. Through this approach, EFSA aims to support greater awareness, critical thinking, and trust among consumers. Throughout 2026, activities will be organized in multiple countries.
