Unilever has announced its intention for all its plastic packaging to be completely reusable, recyclable or compostable by around 2025. In doing so, the food manufacturing giant calls for the entire, rapidly growing sector to accelerate the shift towards a circular economy. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) think tank, at a global level only 14 percent of plastic packaging is recycled, while 40 percent ends up in landfill and a third in the natural surroundings. It is predicted that there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050. Unilever has previously pledged to reduced its amount of packaging by a third by 2020 and to increase the use of recycled plastic by at least 25 percent by 2025.
