The Dutch bakery sector is on the brink of significant changes. According to Frank Janssen, interim director of the Nederlands Bakkerij Centrum (NBC), the industry will face major challenges by 2040, including environmental, climate, energy, and labor market issues. To address these challenges, NBC has developed a strategic vision in collaboration with various stakeholders across the bakery supply chain.
NBC’s vision emphasizes the importance of cooperation throughout the bakery supply chain. From farmers to bakeries, every link plays a vital role in creating a sustainable food system. “We can still decide how our path to 2040 will unfold, but this must be done in partnership with all chain participants,” Janssen explains. The vision focuses on health, sustainability, and transparency, with employees playing a central role.
Despite the challenges, NBC highlights the positive position of the bakery sector. Consumers have trust in bakery products like bread, which they view as nutritious and affordable. This positive perception provides a solid foundation to further strengthen and sustain the bakery chain towards 2040.
In the coming months, think tanks will be formed with representatives from the entire supply chain to further develop the roadmap. While NBC continues to lead this process, the responsibility lies with the parties involved in the bakery sector.
