Amcor opens innovation center in Belgium

  • 31 May 2024

Amcor has opened its latest European Innovation Center in Ghent, Belgium. Here, the packaging leader will collaborate with European brands and retailers to design packaging that benefits both consumers and the environment. This new center, Amcor Innovation Center Europe (AICE), expands Amcor's network of innovation centers and plays a crucial role in developing sustainable packaging solutions.

The AICE focuses on developing new material technologies that make packaging more sustainable and efficient. Michael Zacka, President Amcor Flexibles Europe, Middle East, and Africa, emphasizes the importance of this investment in sustainable and innovative packaging. The center brings together experts in packaging design and material science, supported by advanced technology, to provide comprehensive brand solutions from concept to commercial launch.

Support from concept to shelf

Amcor’s Catalyst™ approach at the AICE supports brands by facilitating collaborative processes from start to finish. The Material Science Center within AICE develops innovative packaging materials that reduce the ecological footprint. Examples include recycle-ready monomaterial solutions and bio-based polymers. Additionally, the Customer Engagement Center examines the attractiveness and usability of packaging in realistic settings. In the E-Commerce Lab, packaging is tested and certified for shipping via platforms like Amazon.

Sustainability and the future

Amcor has set ambitious goals to make all its packaging recyclable, compostable, or reusable by 2025. The new innovation center in Ghent contributes to these goals by ensuring packaging meets the requirements of current and future recycling infrastructure. The AICE building complies with BREEAM sustainability certification standards, highlighting Amcor's commitment to a sustainable future.
