On Saturday 19 March 2022, the 20th edition of the Dutch National Clean-up Day took place with the theme 'Every packaging counts'. A total of 47,107 participants came into action. The business community also participated massively with 1,167 actions and 7,754 participants. This is a record number compared to previous years. In addition, local residents, schools, sports clubs, associations and municipalities from all over the country together organised some 3,445 clean-up activities.
15,219 more people participated than in 2021. Many participants joined in with current clean-up actions. In some activities, more than 250 volunteers of all ages participated. More and more companies are also involved in sustainability and the circular economy. This year there was enormous interest from the business community in taking part in the National Clean-up Day in cooperation with Nederland Schoon.
All participants were asked to use the Litterati app to register the litter found. This collection of data is used for research into litter, which includes looking for structural, effective solutions. In addition, the data will be shared with businesses that can take concrete action on it, specifically in the field of litter. For example, deploying an extra employee to pick up litter or entering into partnerships with municipalities to join forces for a clean neighbourhood.
