A deforestation- and conversion-free soy chain in 2025

  • 22 March 2022

Dutch supermarkets are committed to a deforestation- and conversion-free soy chain by 2025. This ambition is set out in a manifesto of the Dutch supermarket sector, which was published on 22 March 2022. In order to call a halt to deforestation and land conversion, it is important that the market for non-sustainable soy disappears completely.

Stimulus appears to be insufficient

Sustainable soy has been the standard in the Dutch supermarket sector for several years now. They only use soy that is covered by the so-called RTRS credits or credits of a comparable standard. The use of these credits serves as an incentive: the certified soy producers receive an extra contribution through the sale due to these credits. Nevertheless, this incentive does not appear to be sufficient to halt developments and to accelerate the transition to a sustainable soy chain. That is why a follow-up step is necessary.

Only deforestation- and conversion-free soy by 2025

The industry expects to achieve the goal of a deforestation- and conversion-free soy chain in 2025 through a combination of certification and additional monitoring and validation mechanisms. The industry does not intend to exclude any countries or suppliers, but rather to encourage them to work together.
