The Zalmhuys Group in Urk has taken over the operations of H. van Wijnen. Van Wijnen is the oldest salmon company in the Netherlands.
In mid-October, salmon smoker H. van Wijnen b.v. was declared bankrupt. The high purchase prices at the beginning of the year caused the company's demise, knows director Harm ten Napel of the Zalmhuys Groep. Ten Napel was quick to respond after the bankruptcy was declared and calls the takeover "an opportunity". The salmon smokehouse in Krimpen aan de IJssel did not stand still.
Most of H. van Wijnen's 130 workers were offered new jobs straight away. Operations continued under the leadership of the existing management team. Van Wijnen becomes a brand name, and the name of the factory becomes Van Wijnen Smokery.
Last summer, another new salmon factory was commissioned by H. van Wijnen in premises owned by Mayonna/Kennemervis Groep in Spakenburg. Especially for processing fresh salmon for a Dutch retailer and for H. van Wijnen's smokehouse in Krimpen aan den IJssel. The Zalmhuys Group, together with the Kennemervis Group as owner of the premises, is continuing the Spakenburg operations.
