On 3 May, the 27 EU countries gave the green light to a European Commission proposal to authorise the yellow mealworm on the food market for human consumption. This novel food is intended to be used as a whole, dried insect in the form of snacks or as a food ingredient in a number of food products. This is the first time that an insect has been approved for consumption in Europe. The Commission will adopt a regulation authorising the yellow mealworm as a foodstuff in the coming weeks.
Currently, there are 11 applications for insects that are being assessed by EFSA for their safety.
