Starting in 2025, Verpact will further encourage producers and importers of plastic packaging to use highly recyclable materials. The reward for using recycled plastic (recyclate) will rise from 10 cents to 20 cents per kilogram. This move makes Verpact the first organisation in Europe to offer such an incentive.
On 10 September 2024, Verpact announced its updated Waste Management Contribution rates for 2025. Since 2019, the organisation has implemented a differentiated tariff system, where packaging that is more recyclable benefits from higher rewards. The maximum discount for recyclable packaging will increase to 60 cents per kilogram in 2025. In addition, a lower fee remains in place for reusable packaging, encouraging the practice of re-use.
With these increased rewards, Verpact is anticipating future European legislation, including the upcoming PPWR regulations. The organisation encourages producers and importers to use more recycled plastic rather than virgin plastic. Through its Knowledge Institute for Sustainable Packaging, Verpact also provides tools like recycling checks and design plans to help further improve packaging.
Verpact continues to work towards a more closed packaging loop, adjusting rates annually based on the costs of collection, sorting, and recycling various materials. Despite increasing activities, system contributions for 2025 will remain stable, with the exception of certain materials like aluminium and drink cartons.
