UK food allergy labelling laws tightened

  • 21 October 2021

Since 1 October, the UK Food Information Amendment, better known as Natasha's Law, has been in force, requiring the labelling of pre-packaged food for immediate sale to include a full list of ingredients with the 14 most important allergens clearly highlighted. This legislation was introduced to better protect people with allergies and give them more confidence in the food they buy.

The legislation was prompted by the death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who died of an allergic reaction after eating a pre-packaged meal containing an ingredient not listed on the label. A lobby group led by Natasha's parents has used a public campaign to persuade the UK government to introduce stricter legislation.

Under the new rules, pre-packaged food for direct sale must be labelled clearly with the following information:

  • The name of the food.
  • A full list of ingredients, with the allergenic ingredients highlighted (e.g. in bold, in italics or in a different colour).

The new rules will apply to food prepared and packaged in the same location as it is sold, such as packaged salads or sandwiches prepared by an employee earlier in the day that are then placed in a display case or shelf for sale. The legislation will also apply in all parts of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).
