The number of meat offers has decreased for the first time since 2015. This is evident from the Wakker Dier leaflet monitor. In the first half of 2021, the number of meat offers reached a record high, but has now returned to the level of 2020.
The number of meat and meat products on offer declined at almost all supermarket chains. The biggest decreases were seen at Albert Heijn (-366), Hoogvliet (-249) and Dirk (-203). Three of the twelve supermarket chains measured actually did worse: the number of meat offers at Plus (+110), Aldi (+75) and Vomar (+18) increased.
The fall in offers was seen in chicken (-279), beef (-365) and pork (-598). Strikingly, the number of meat replacement offers remained virtually the same (+29). This may be due to the fact that they signed the climate agreement stating that we should eat more vegetable proteins instead of animal ones.
