Dutch parliament does not want a meat tax

  • 11 May 2022

On Tuesday 10 May 2022, a majority in the Lower House supported a motion by the PVV asking the government not to implement a meat tax.

Minister Staghouwer of LNV informed the House in March that he was considering a study into the possibilities of discouraging the consumption of meat by means of a price incentive. After receiving many questions about this in a debate, he stated that the aim of the study would be to determine a realistic price and that the proceeds of a possible meat tax could be used to help farmers produce more sustainably.

VVD and CDA immediately stated that they do not want to introduce a meat tax. Especially now that food prices are rising at an enormous rate.
