Strict measures for the veal sector after FMD in Germany

  • 13 January 2025

The Netherlands has implemented strict precautionary measures following reports of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the German state of Brandenburg. Minister Wiersma of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Nature emphasized that there are no indications of an outbreak in the Netherlands, but vigilance remains crucial. The veal sector is now subject to a nationwide transport ban and a visitor ban to minimize any potential risks.

Transport ban and visitor restrictions

Since December 1, more than 3,600 calves from Brandenburg have been transported to the Netherlands via German collection centers. These animals are located on over 125 veal farms across the country. Although there have been no direct livestock transports from Brandenburg, the minister wants to rule out all risks. Therefore, a ban is in place on moving veal calves, except for transport to slaughterhouses. These transports must comply with strict hygiene protocols to prevent the virus from spreading. Visitors are also temporarily prohibited from entering veal farms, with exceptions for essential services such as veterinarians, provided they adhere to hygiene measures.

Broad risk investigation

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is currently investigating whether there are any infections at the affected farms. At the same time, samples previously submitted for bluetongue testing are being retested for FMD. The minister has requested the Expert Group on Animal Diseases to provide a risk assessment as soon as possible. The NVWA is also closely monitoring other species, such as goats, sheep, and pigs, for potential risks.

All measures will remain in place until there is more clarity regarding the situation in Germany and the results of the ongoing investigations are available.
