Sharp rise in food-related outbreaks

  • 20 October 2022

In 2021, GGDs and the NVWA registered a total of 838 food-related outbreaks with 3,517 sick people with the RIVM-CIb. This is a sharp increase compared to 2020 (559 outbreaks and 1,907 sick people). It is also higher than in the 2015-2019 period. In an increasing proportion of outbreaks, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of isolates plays a role in outbreak identification and source investigation. This is evident from the recently published report Registration of Foodborne Outbreaks In The Netherlands, 2021.
