SeaNext gives seafood a fixed place in the protein transition

  • 15 January 2026

The protein transition is well underway. Consumers are eating more consciously and looking for greater variety on their plates. Plant-based foods receive a lot of attention, but one protein source often remains underrepresented: seafood. With the launch of SeaNext, the Nederlands Visbureau aims to change that. The new platform is live and focuses on the role of fish, shellfish, and crustaceans in the menu of tomorrow.

SeaNext responds to changing eating patterns in which health, sustainability, and origin carry greater weight. Within this development, the focus is shifting toward more plant-based and alternative proteins. According to SeaNext, seafood clearly belongs in that picture.

Protein transition is about variety

The platform emphasizes that the protein transition is not a matter of either-or. The movement is about both-and. Less meat, more variety, and more plant-based options, complemented by animal proteins. Seafood is positioned as a flexible protein in this context. Nutritious, versatile, and relevant for flexitarians and conscious consumers.

SeaNext aims to move seafood from an overlooked choice to a deliberate one. This is done by providing context, removing misconceptions, and offering new perspectives. The platform shows how seafood fits logically within a future-proof eating pattern.

Knowledge sharing and visibility

SeaNext functions as a platform that connects knowledge, the sector, and consumers. The focus is on clear and accessible information about the role of seafood within the protein transition. The launch marks a strong start to 2026 and lays the foundation for further rollout and visibility.

In the coming period, the platform will be expanded with news, background stories, and updates on activities and collaborations. SeaNext invites interested parties to visit the platform and share it within their network.

SeaNext is an initiative of the Nederlands Visbureau and is co-funded by the European Union through the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF).
