SEA Water converts salt water into drinking water

  • 29 July 2022

In August 2022, SEA Water will launch its first product in the Netherlands. SEA Water converts local seawater into drinking water. They do this using an innovative technique powered by solar energy. This makes SEA Water the first company in the world to make sustainably filtered seawater available to the consumer market. With their new brand and product, founders and brothers Tammo and Jort Wildschut want to create awareness for global water scarcity and encourage consumers to drink water locally.

Drinking water of the future

SEA Water's product is a sustainable alternative to existing water brands, which usually have a considerable ecological footprint. Every day, millions of bottles of water are shipped around the world: from Fiji to Europe and from the Alps to America. Moreover, water producers are dependent on spring and mineral water and obtain their product from limited water sources. This while most countries, including the Netherlands, are surrounded by seawater. By using the infinite source of the sea, SEA Water shows that there is a better way to drink water.

Sustainable seawater filtration plants

Although the technique of desalination has been around for several years, these are almost always energy-intensive plants that rely on fossil fuels. SEA Water therefore uses a new, energy-efficient plant that is powered entirely by solar energy. Thanks to this technology, the process of filtering the salt out of seawater has no negative impact on the environment.

SEA Water's first installation is located in the North Sea. The installations are easy to install at various locations worldwide. The brothers aim to provide local drinking water all over the world, thus playing a role in the fight against (drinking) water scarcity.
