Scoop: soup of purified rainwater

  • 17 December 2020

After months of preparation, the first soup of purified rainwater was recently produced at Uytewaal Catering in Houten. The production of food with rainwater has never been done before, until now this is done exclusively with drinking water. As part of the  VIDA project, D2D Water Solutions shows that rainwater can also be an excellent source for the production of food.

At the end of last year, D2D Water Solutions installed three concrete tanks at Uytewaal Catering that can collect a total of 60,000 liters of rainwater. In addition, the company installed a Drop2Drink unit to purify the rainwater in four consecutive steps: microfiltration, activated carbon filtration, ultrafiltration and UV technology.

"The purified rainwater cannot yet be used on a large scale by the caterer for food production," says Johan Bel, owner of D2D Water Solutions. "For food production with purified rainwater, permission is required from the NVWA. Now we have shown - I think first in the world - that you can also use purified rainwater".

Monitoring water quality

Since July 2020, D2D Water Solutions continuously monitors the quality of the rainwater and the purified rainwater in the tanks. "The value of the project lies mainly in the large amounts of data we are now collecting," explains Bel. "The aim is to demonstrate that we can fully meet the requirements of the Drinking Water Decree". Bel is not yet able to say anything about the initial results. They will not be published until February.
