Potato processing down more than 20 percent

  • 02 June 2026

The Dutch potato processing industry processed fewer potatoes in April than a year earlier. According to figures from VAVI, the volume reached 293,400 tons. In April 2025, that figure still stood at 367,300 tons. As a result, processing volumes were down by more than 20 percent.

Fewer pre-fried potato products

Of the total volume, 140,100 tons were processed into pre-fried potato products. A year earlier, the figure was 171,600 tons. Production of other potato consumption products amounted to 27,400 tons, compared with 27,900 tons in April 2025.

Processed volumes were also lower over a longer period. Between May 2025 and April 2026, companies processed a total of 3.58 million tons of potatoes. In the comparable period a year earlier, that volume amounted to 3.91 million tons.

Fewer imported potatoes

The volume of imported potatoes also declined. In April, 93,700 tons of the potatoes processed originated from imports. A year earlier, the figure was 140,400 tons. Imported potatoes accounted for 31.9 percent of the total volume. In April 2025, that share stood at 38.2 percent.

Annual total lags behind

The figures also show a lower total for pre-fried potato products. Between May 2025 and April 2026, 1.66 million tons were processed. In the preceding twelve-month period, the figure was 1.79 million tons.

The total for other potato consumption products was slightly higher. It amounted to 328,200 tons compared with 316,500 tons in the comparable period a year earlier.
