Nutri-Score and swaps at Albert Heijn

  • 05 March 2025

Albert Heijn aims to help customers make healthier food choices and makes it easier to select products that align with the Schijf van Vijf. Vegetables play a key role in this, both at dinner and throughout the day. That’s why the supermarket chain is introducing the ‘Vegetable of the Week,’ featuring three recipes to add variety to meals. Additionally, 40 fresh meal kits now include a standard 200 grams of vegetables per person. Albert Heijn aims for more than 35% of its sold products to meet Schijf van Vijf guidelines by 2030.

Swapping for a healthier choice

Albert Heijn is now rolling out ‘swapping’ in the Netherlands, a concept that has already been successful in Flanders. This initiative helps customers make healthier choices by replacing certain products or ingredients. Examples include swapping regular pasta for whole wheat or lentil spaghetti, or choosing cauliflower or broccoli rice instead of regular rice. The AH Assistant in the AH app supports customers with questions about healthier eating. Search data shows that terms like ‘healthy’ and ‘high protein’ are among the most frequently searched in the app.

Nutri-Score across the full range

Albert Heijn is also expanding Nutri-Score to its entire product range. Since early 2022, the nutritional rating has already been available for over 6,000 private-label products. Now, A-brand products are being gradually labeled with Nutri-Score as well, starting with dairy, breakfast cereals, and snacks. The score will be displayed on electronic shelf labels in stores and online in the AH app and webshop.

CEO Marit van Egmond emphasizes: “At Albert Heijn, we want our customers to feel good and enjoy life to the fullest. In the end, small, achievable steps make the biggest difference – from an extra serving of vegetables on your plate to smart swaps in your daily routine.”
