Schouten Europe is introducing two new plant-based snacks: Power Bites and Sea Bites. With this launch, the Dutch family-owned company aims to breathe new life into the meat and fish alternatives category. After years of strong growth, the market has now come to a standstill. Schouten sees this as the right moment to shift gears with distinctive products.
The new snacks are deliberately not designed to mimic animal-based products. “Although there are excellent plant-based alternatives available, the direct comparison with meat and fish can sometimes be a barrier for consumers,” says Anke van Eijk, R&D Manager at Schouten. “With Power Bites and Sea Bites, we focus on tasty, plant-based products that stand on their own.”
Power Bites are savoury snack balls with a rich, nutty flavour experience. “For years, our Notenballetjes were a success, but due to allergens, the product wasn’t suitable for every production environment,” Van Eijk explains. “That’s why we developed an alternative without nuts, while keeping the same flavour profile. This way, even more people can enjoy this plant-based snack.”
Sea Bites are made using Schouten’s NewTexture technology, which ensures outstanding texture and taste. “With Sea Bites, we offer consumers a completely new plant-based snacking experience, without compromising on flavour or mouthfeel,” says Van Eijk. The snack is suitable for tapas platters or as part of a meal.
Schouten sees this development as a contribution to the protein transition and the move towards a more sustainable food system.
