More European food audits planned for 2027

The European Commission will conduct more controls within and outside the EU in 2027. International trade flows will receive particular attention. For the Netherlands, the program includes specific controls that directly affect parts of the food industry. Products from several key countries of origin will also face closer scrutiny.

Poultry and fish take center stage

The Commission will investigate microbiological contamination in Dutch poultry. One audit will focus on animal health. A second audit will address public health risks. Spain and Slovakia will also undergo both audits.

A fact-finding visit focusing on fishery products is also planned. This visit will cover highly processed and ultra-processed fishery products. The Commission will also visit Ireland, Spain, Italy, and Lithuania for this purpose. The Netherlands will also undergo an audit on the sustainable use of pesticides. Six other Member States are scheduled for an audit on this subject.

More audits in non-EU countries

DG SANTE has scheduled 144 audits for 2027. The program also includes eight fact-finding visits. The controls cover food safety, feed safety, and animal health. Animal welfare, plant health, and import controls also fall within the program.

Member States will account for 45 percent of all audits. This share is lower than in previous years. The Commission is placing greater emphasis on trade and candidate countries.

A total of 58 on-site export-related audits are scheduled in non-EU countries. That is 107 percent more than in 2025. Controls at EU border control posts will also increase. The Commission has scheduled eight audits, 60 percent more than in 2025.

Many product groups receive attention

The audits in non-EU countries cover various products and risks. These include meat, fish, dairy, and plant products. Residues, pesticides, and food contact materials will also receive attention.

Brazil will undergo audits covering pesticides and poultry meat. The United States will face audits covering fish, dairy, and almonds. Japan and South Africa will undergo controls on food contact materials made from recycled plastic.
