GS1 and JoinData launch location register for agricultural sector

  • 26 April 2023

GS1 Netherlands and JoinData are teaming up to create a single source for organisation and location data of agricultural companies in the Netherlands. This data will be centrally recorded based on GS1 standards, making it possible in the future to identify the journey of products from country to customer.

The collaboration between the two companies is a non-profit one and aims to improve the efficiency of the daily operations of agricultural companies, as well as contribute to sustainability and insight in the chain.

Clear data back into the chain

The idea is to create a single source of standardised location data of agricultural businesses and underlying locations such as stables, silos, storage cells, greenhouses, plots, etc. The GLN (Global Location Number) will be used to record the (sub)locations of farms and information such as hallmarks and certificates can be added. This information can be shared with suppliers and buyers in the form of a Digital Organisation Passport.

The advantages of this cooperation are great: companies can work more efficiently, the journey of products through the chain can be recorded and there is a central assurance of location data. The cooperation will start with a Proof of Concept (POC) in the meat sector, involving the companies Vion Food Group, Westfort Meat Products and VanLoonGroup. The aim is to demonstrate that the collaboration is successful by the end of 2023.

The CEO of GS1 Netherlands, Mirjam Karmiggelt, stressed the importance of global unique identification of locations if data is to flow through the agro chain. The CEO of JoinData, Sener Celik, sees the collaboration as a great step forward in making data available and making the chain more sustainable.
