Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo is leading the collaborative initiative Success4BioActives, which has secured a €700,000 grant from the North Limburg regional deal. The project aims to develop in-depth knowledge of bioactive compounds in fruits and vegetables, substances that are becoming increasingly important for our health. This collaboration highlights the need for innovation in the horticultural sector, shifting away from bulk production towards the development of high-quality, health-focused products.
The horticultural sector in North Limburg plays a vital role in creating new business models, with a focus on bioactive compounds such as vitamins, antioxidants, and fibers. Research has shown that the concentrations of these compounds vary significantly across different varieties and have even decreased over the past few decades. This presents opportunities for targeted breeding and cultivation optimization, potentially leading to products with enhanced health benefits.
Within Success4BioActives, various research groups and companies, including Maastricht University, HAS Green Academy, Compas Agro, and Botany, are collaborating on model projects. These projects aim to gain deep insights into the cultivation and processing of bioactive compounds. The focus is on developing new products and business models that contribute to the sustainability of the horticultural sector. Companies in the sector are encouraged to join these innovative efforts, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future.
