In 2025, Dutch supermarkets sold more pre-cut lettuce than uncut lettuce. The figures were 27.3 million and 23.5 million kilograms, respectively. Sales volume for pre-cut lettuce remained virtually unchanged from 2024. Sales of uncut lettuce, however, declined. The figures come from GroentenFruit Huis's lettuce fact sheet.
The figures for pre-cut lettuce also include prepared salads. In 2024, supermarkets still sold 24.1 million kilograms of uncut lettuce. Sales of butterhead lettuce in particular are declining.
In 2025, pre-cut lettuce generated €280.5 million in supermarket sales. Sales of uncut lettuce totaled €54 million. Iceberg lettuce is the top-selling variety in both categories. It accounted for 72 percent of uncut lettuce sold by volume. In the pre-cut category, its share was 37 percent. Prepared salads and salad mixes together accounted for 35 percent of that volume.
Dutch lettuce production rose slightly to 117 million kilograms in 2025. Iceberg lettuce was by far the leading variety, at 95 million kilograms. Butterhead lettuce and other varieties totaled 22 million kilograms. In 2025, lettuce was grown on 2,094 hectares in the Netherlands. Limburg accounted for 43 percent of the growing area. Noord-Brabant followed with 36 percent, and Noord-Holland with 18 percent.
The Netherlands exported 119 million kilograms of lettuce, including transit shipments. Germany was the main destination, accounting for 30 percent. Italy followed with 21 percent and Belgium with 12 percent. France accounted for 5 percent of exports. The United Kingdom and Spain each accounted for 4 percent.
