De Groot fresh group acquires Gebrs Van Aarle

  • 10 July 2025

It all happened quickly. After brief but constructive talks, Gebrs Van Aarle has transferred all its shares to De Groot fresh group. Two Brabant-based family businesses, both deeply rooted in the fresh produce sector, are joining forces.

Emotional, but necessary

It wasn’t an easy decision. “For our family, handing over a company that’s been around for nearly 60 years was deeply emotional,” says Marjon van Aarle. “But we know this scale-up is essential for the continuity of the business. That’s why we’re proud and happy with this step.”

Van Aarle will continue operations from its location in Schijndel. Over 140 employees work there every day, supplying a broad range of fresh produce to clients across various sectors.

First step after a strategic shift

For De Groot, the acquisition fits seamlessly into its new direction. That shift began last year with the sale of its international retail division to Edeka. Now comes a first move toward scaling up within wholesale. The fact that this step involves another Brabant family business — “with a similar culture” — is a welcome bonus.

Schijndel and Breda complement each other

This is not a full-scale merger. Breda remains Breda, Schijndel remains Schijndel. De Groot’s location has long outgrown its space, while Van Aarle offers room to grow. A practical match, in that sense.

For now, the focus lies on aligning central services — smarter supply chain logistics, better coordination.

Andries van den Bogert will take the lead at Van Aarle. “I’m looking forward to doing this together with the great team that’s ready in Schijndel for this collaboration.”
