Clarity about mustard allergens

  • 11 April 2022

Nutrilab has expanded the LC-MSMS method for allergen screening. This in response to requests from the market. A reference method for the identification of allergenic proteins from mustard was lacking and existing test kits based on ELISA or PCR are not specific enough or can even give false positive results. Therefore, it remained unclear what caused the positive results: mustard, or a related crucifer (Brassicaceae). With the expanded method via LC-MSMS, different types of mustard and related Brassicaceae can be better distinguished from each other.

Nutrilab identifies the following species: Brown mustard (B. juncea), Black mustard (B. nigra), White/yellow mustard (Sinapsis alba), Wild mustard or Herik (S. arvensis), Ethiopian mustard (B. Carinata), Rapeseed (B. napus) and Rapeseed (B. rapa). Further information is available on the website.
