BioMarktMeter maps the organic food market

  • 03 June 2025

How is the organic market developing in the Netherlands? The newly launched BioMarktMeter now provides weekly insights. Wageningen University & Research carries out this monitor on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN).

Price differences vary significantly

The BioMarktMeter tracks supply and demand for organic products in supermarkets, including price, promotion and product range. Initial results show that price differences can be substantial. For example, organic pork costs an average of €18.62 per kilo, compared to €8.23 for conventional pork. Dutch organic cheese is another standout, priced at €16.11 per kilo, more than twice the price of its non-organic counterpart at €8.11. For potatoes, milk and carrots, the gap is much smaller.

Limited organic presence in supermarket flyers

The share of organic products in promotional flyers remains modest. In the first quarter of 2025, this share ranged from 0.4% to 5.7%, with an average of 2.8% across five major supermarkets: Albert Heijn, Aldi, Jumbo, Lidl and PLUS.

Monitor aligns with national action plan

The monitor is part of the national Action Plan for Growth in Organic Production and Consumption 2022–2030, which aims for 15% of agricultural land to be organic by 2030. In addition to weekly measurements and monthly reports, the BioMarktMeter will later this year include sales data from the foodservice sector and specialist organic stores, along with insights into consumer behaviour. All data is available at www.staatvanbiologisch.nl under the BioMarktMeter tab.
