Belgium and Netherlands want to strengthen alternative protein sector

  • 30 October 2024

At an inspiration event on October 24 in Brussels, organized by the Dutch Embassy and the Flemish organization Next Food Chain, Dutch and Flemish stakeholders gathered to discuss what is needed to scale up the alternative protein sector. The Dutch Ambassador to Belgium, Brechje Schwachöfer, highlighted the importance of a holistic approach to the protein transition, accommodating meat-eaters, vegetarians, and vegans alike, but in a sustainable way. The program included presentations and discussions on the sector’s opportunities and challenges.

Challenges in scaling up

The event highlighted that the alternative protein sector in the Netherlands and Flanders remains relatively young and often relies on hybrid companies. Start-ups in this field are highly motivated, yet sometimes lack a focus on economic performance, making the shift to a larger scale difficult. The sector views government support as crucial to the survival and success of companies at this stage. Collaboration with larger companies was also noted as a possible path to sustainable growth.

Solutions for growth and collaboration

Some of the discussed solutions for successful scaling included partnerships between businesses and research institutions, increasing sector visibility, connecting the supply chain, and research grants. Attendees also highlighted competition issues stemming from subsidies in the animal-based sector and advocated for a level playing field for plant-based alternatives. Better consumer information and education for children were mentioned as essential next steps. For the LVVN team, this event marks the beginning of a bilateral initiative, with plans for a comparative study covering the Netherlands, Flanders, and Wallonia.
