Waste Streams as Raw Material for Food one Step Closer

  • 21 December 2023

The efficient upgrading of food and beverage waste streams receives a boost with the innovative drying technology of Multiphase Dryers. This startup has developed a method that utilizes low-grade residual heat to cost-effectively dry and upgrade moist waste streams from the food and beverage industry. The Limburg Development and Investment Company (LIOF) invests from the Limburg Early Phase Fund to facilitate the further development of the prototype into a condensing dryer and to validate its commercial feasibility.

Traditional drying processes demand high-quality heat, often derived from natural gas, electricity, or coal, making them costly and environmentally burdensome. However, Multiphase Dryers' appliances leverage residual heat at a temperature of only 50 degrees, which would otherwise be wasted. This enables the upgrading of moist waste streams in an affordable and sustainable manner, marking a promising development for companies in the food and beverage sector.

Relevant for Agrifood Companies

Multiphase Dryers' drying technology presents opportunities for agrifood companies dealing with moisture-rich byproducts and biobased waste streams. Consider the processing of potato peels into mashed potatoes or the upgrading of spent grains to ingredients for bread, meat substitutes, or pastries. Common waste streams, currently underutilized or at best serving as wet animal feed, can thus become valuable raw materials.

Pilot Launch in 2024

The practical test of Multiphase Dryers is set to commence in the second quarter of 2024. This pilot will be conducted at companies with monostreams, focusing on waste streams from a specific product. This could include food production companies or processing industries. The pilot aims to gain experience, further develop the dryers, and assess their commercial applicability. These efforts are supported by the investment from LIOF, emphasizing a strong commitment to early-phase innovations through the Limburg Early Phase Fund.
