Prices of essential groceries are gradually declining

  • 20 December 2023

Indicated by a recent price survey conducted by the Dutch Consumer Association, prices of essential groceries are gradually declining. Over the past six months, basic items such as milk, coffee, tea, rice, potatoes, cheese, and peanut butter have seen an average decrease of 3%. However, despite this reduction, they remain 31% more expensive than two years ago. Notably, the price gap between premium brands and store or budget brands has widened once again.

A significant drop in prices is observed in fresh dairy products. Half-liter packs of semi-skimmed milk decreased by an average of 20%, while full-fat milk saw a 16% reduction. Additionally, the price of a one-liter bottle of sunflower oil dropped by an average of 27%, and a jar of peanut butter became 13% more affordable. However, some products experienced price hikes, including a 13% increase in the cost of canned chicken soup (800 ml) and various types of sweets due to high sugar prices.

The Consumer Association also notes an increasing disparity in prices between premium brands and store or budget brands. Consumers can now save 53% by opting for the latter, a rise from 50% in 2021 and 40% in 2018. Despite more frequent promotions on premium brands, even 'buy one, get one free' offers often cannot match the substantial price differences between brands.
