There's a prevailing trend in the Netherlands: we're living longer but are also becoming heavier and increasingly facing chronic illnesses. The key to change? Nutrition. Yet, despite its pivotal role, knowledge sometimes falls short. On October 25th, the Ministry of VWS took a significant step towards change by receiving the report titled 'Nutrition and Health: Investing in the Foundation of Nutritional Policy'.
This report, a collaboration between ZonMw, RIVM, the Health Council, and the Nutrition Centre, underscores the importance of nutrition in our policies. Our current nutritional guidelines, like the 'Schijf van Vijf', are primarily based on studies involving healthy young individuals. This creates a knowledge gap for the growing older and overweight population. Therefore, it's vital to conduct research that broadens our current nutritional guidelines to be more representative of all Dutch citizens.
The Health Council plays a central role in formulating these guidelines. They provide recommendations on essential nutrients, such as vitamins, based on international standards and scientific literature. However, considering the current demographic composition, specific groups like the elderly and pregnant women require special consideration.
The solution? A robust research program, advocated by ZonMw, aimed at redefining and refining our nutritional guidelines. This in-depth knowledge allows organizations like the Health Council and the Nutrition Centre to hone their advice, leading to a healthier Dutch society.
At its core, the message is clear: nutrition is indispensable for the health of the Netherlands. With the right knowledge and research, we can pave a future where every Dutch citizen feels optimally nourished and healthy.
