Verpact will expand its discounts for plastic packaging starting in 2027. Companies that use certain recycled or renewable raw materials can qualify for additional discounts. Fees for beverage cartons, aluminum, and packaging covered by the deposit return system will increase. The new fees and discounts take effect on January 1, 2027.
Verpact already offers discounts for readily recyclable packaging and the use of recycled plastic. Verpact is adding a discount for recycled plastic sourced from Europe. Packaging made with biobased drop-in materials also qualifies for this discount. Examples include bio-PE, bio-PP, and bio-PET.
“Recycling alone is not enough,” says Hester Klein Lankhorst, CEO of Verpact. With these discounts, Verpact aims to encourage the use of circular raw materials. The organization also wants to increase the availability of these materials. The program is intended to support sufficient recycling capacity and a stable market for recycled materials.
Fees for plastic, glass, paper and cardboard, wood, and other metals will remain unchanged. Fees for beverage cartons and aluminum will increase. Producer contributions for cans and plastic bottles covered by the deposit return system will also rise.
The increases are linked to investments to meet statutory targets. Verpact is also investing to further develop recycling capacity. The organization also wants to make more high-quality recycled raw materials available.
Verpact is introducing a separate fee for plastic beverage bottles without a deposit. This is linked to the planned expansion of the deposit return system. This includes bottles for dairy products and juice, among others.
