54% of Dutch people say they don't buy hybrid meat

  • 29 September 2026

Hybrid meat products combine meat with plant-based ingredients. According to the Nationaal Vleesonderzoek 2026, 54% of respondents say they do not buy these products. At the same time, around 95% of participants say they still eat meat. If hybrid products affect the taste, 46% of respondents consider taste and quality more important than sustainability.

Mixed reactions

32% of participants view the development of hybrid products positively. An equal share view it negatively. Another 31% of respondents are neutral.

When weighing taste against sustainability, 10% of respondents consider sustainability more important than taste and quality. For 25% of participants, taste and quality matter just as much as sustainability. Participants cite sustainability and health more often than a lower price or better taste as possible reasons to buy hybrid products.

Affordability and Dutch meat

The survey also addresses the affordability of meat. In 2024, 45% of respondents felt meat was not affordable for everyone. In the 2026 survey, 52% of respondents hold that view. According to 66% of participants, policymakers should keep meat affordable for people on lower incomes.

63% of respondents say they prefer Dutch meat. Another 69% believe the Netherlands should maintain a strong meat sector.

The study was commissioned by organizations in the meat supply chain. The findings are based on an online questionnaire that 2,606 adults completed in full between May 1 and 7, 2026. The results were weighted by age, sex, and education level.
