Vattenfall launches seaweed snack with Samuel L. Jackson

Growing seaweed between wind turbines? And turning it into snacks? That’s exactly what Vattenfall is doing at the Vesterhav Syd offshore wind farm in Denmark, with none other than Samuel L. Jackson as its frontman.

Generating wind power, and cleaning the water

Seaweed grows on lines suspended between the turbines. The project, called WIN@sea, is built around one key question: what more can a wind farm offer, besides generating electricity? In partnership with others, Vattenfall is exploring how offshore wind farms might also support food production and environmental monitoring.

And that seaweed? It does more than you might expect. It absorbs CO₂ and excess nutrients, helping to improve water quality. Good news for the marine ecosystem. Once harvested, the seaweed can be used for various purposes, including food.

Samuel L. Jackson steps in

For this campaign, Vattenfall has teamed up with a striking ambassador: actor Samuel L. Jackson. Known for countless Hollywood productions, but also with a background in marine biology. He’s fully behind the initiative.

“For me, it’s about the world we leave behind for the next generation. That’s why I wanted to be part of this collaboration with Vattenfall,” he says. “These offshore wind farms don’t just produce fossil-free electricity, they create an environment where marine life can thrive.”

The seaweed snacks aren’t intended for retail. A limited batch was produced and will be shared with a select group of recipients.

A snack with a message

According to Vattenfall, this project is not just about the product itself. It’s about the bigger picture: energy infrastructure that works hand in hand with nature restoration. “And with an ambassador like Samuel L. Jackson, we’re able to share that message with a wider audience,” says Helle Herk-Hansen, Head of Environment at Vattenfall.

So, what do the snacks taste like? Jackson doesn’t hesitate: “They’re salty and tasty, but these snacks are about more than just flavour. This project is about finding ways for our energy infrastructure to coexist with nature. That’s groundbreaking. That’s something people can get behind.”
