Vandemoortele acquires Bunge’s margarine division

  • 26 March 2025

The Belgian food group Vandemoortele is acquiring the European Margarines & Spreads business from Bunge. With this move, the family-owned company aims to further strengthen its position in the plant-based food sector. The deal includes production sites in Germany, Poland and Finland, a portfolio of twenty brands, and more than 800 employees.

Focus on growth and geographic reach

Bunge’s operations generate annual revenues of over €450 million. “This acquisition offers an interesting geographic complement,” said CEO Yvon Guerin. Vandemoortele already had a strong presence in Western and Southern Europe, and is now expanding into Central and Eastern Europe as well as Scandinavia.

The acquisition aligns with the strategy of Vandemoortele’s Plant-Based Food Solutions business line. The group is looking to grow not only in its core categories of margarines and plant-based oils, but also in sauces, creams and plant-based cheese.

Innovation for both B2C and B2B

Both Vandemoortele and Bunge serve the market through retail and professional channels. “Bunge’s business has a proven track record of delivering innovative branded products,” said Bart Bruyneel, Managing Director Plant-Based Food Solutions. He sees numerous opportunities for product development and broader market reach across Europe.

The acquisition is subject to merger control and is expected to be completed in 2026. No financial details have been disclosed. Rothschild & Co acted as M&A advisor to Vandemoortele.
