Urk establishes itself as European seafood centre

  • 30 May 2023

Urk is a vibrant centre for the seafood sector with more than 50 companies and over 4,500 employees. Local companies have joined forces to position Urk as a future-proof centre for fishing and fish processing.

The main aim is to improve staff training levels with the help of its own academy. The Urk Fish Wholesalers Association (VVU) also wants to strengthen the image of Urk Seafood.

Urk, a fishing village with 22,000 inhabitants, is growing rapidly in seafood trade and processing. Salmon is the leading product with increasing demand. Urk has all the assets to establish itself as a European centre for seafood, thanks to its favourable infrastructure and well-equipped business parks for direct processing and export.

The Urk seafood sector is providing increasing employment opportunities. The Urk Fish Wholesalers Association is working with ROC Friese Poort to set up the Urk Seafood Academy, a training programme aimed at the seafood processing industry.

To strengthen the image of Urk Seafood, a campaign targeting wholesalers and retailers worldwide is being developed. The unique aspects of Urk Seafood will be highlighted. Urk City Councilor Nathanaël Middelkoop supports this campaign and emphasises Urk's unique position as a seafood hub.
