Unilever achieves results with regenerative agriculture

  • 03 October 2023

Imagine a world where agriculture doesn't just produce food, but also plays a part in healing our planet. Unilever is turning this vision into reality, now unveiling the promising results of its regenerative agriculture endeavors in Europe.

In 2021, Unilever launched its Regenerative Agriculture Principles, a bold initiative collaborating with farmers and suppliers to revolutionize agriculture. The focus? Restoring soil health, ensuring food security, and aiming to reach the Net Zero target by 2039.

Two of these groundbreaking projects, one targeting tomatoes in Spain and the other rice in Italy, are already showing impressive environmental gains. Though true change in agriculture often spans years, Unilever demonstrates reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, enhanced biodiversity, and improved water quality.

Water and Soil Management

In Spain, Unilever partnered with Agraz to support farmers in protecting their crops from drought and in enhancing biodiversity. Leveraging advanced technology, farmers could irrigate more precisely, leading to substantial savings and more sustainable farming practices. The outcome? A staggering 37% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a boost in soil fertility.

Reducing Water Pollution

In Italy, water pollution was a focal point. Collaborating with Parboriz, Unilever discovered methods that resulted in up to a 78% reduction in chemical residues in water.

Hanneke Faber, President of Nutrition at Unilever, remarks: "Witnessing this impact is truly heartening. It underscores the power of collaboration in driving sustainable change."

With nine active projects currently spanning from North America to South Asia, Unilever has ambitious plans. By year's end, they anticipate involvement of around 300,000 hectares, with a goal to run over 100 programs by 2030.
