UK: tougher border controls on goods from EU

  • 04 January 2022

On 1 January 2022, the UK will tighten customs requirements as part of the Brexit. This means that a UK import declaration must be completed for all products shipped from the EU. The import of animal and plant products must also be notified in advance to the British authorities.

UK Customs were to ask for more paperwork when importing food products like milk and meat from the EU from April 2021. However, the deadline was postponed several times. According to the UK, the red tape and new immigration rules are exacerbating problems in the supply chain. On the European side, however, the additional controls are already in place for UK goods.

A number of other customs formalities will be adjusted later this year. Safety and security declarations will not be required until 1 July 2022.
