As of January 1, 2025, the Tönnies Group will make a significant transition: changing its name from Tönnies Holding to Premium Food Group (PFG). This decision reflects the evolution of Tönnies, a family-owned business based in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, which has developed over recent years from a purely meat-focused company into a diverse player within the food industry. The Tönnies brand, known for its high-quality meat, will remain but will exclusively represent the meat production segment of the company.
The group’s current portfolio extends beyond meat products. Tönnies now offers a wide range of food products, including vegetarian options, convenience items, and animal-based by-products such as proteins and fats. Additionally, the group supplies raw materials to the pharmaceutical and biofuel sectors and manages cold storage facilities and logistics services. According to owners Clemens, Maximilian, and Robert Tönnies, the company’s focus remains on innovative and sustainable processes that meet consumer needs. This strategic diversification establishes Tönnies as a 360-degree food supplier equipped to face the future.
With the formation of the Premium Food Group, a more decentralized structure is also being introduced. Business units will gain more autonomy and decision-making power, while administrative functions will be centralized within the holding. “We prefer multiple small, agile units over a single, unwieldy organization,” says Maximilian Tönnies. Despite the new name and structure, Tönnies remains true to its roots, with the Tönnies brand continuing to be associated with quality meat production. The family name retains its standing as a symbol of high-quality meat products, both nationally and internationally.
