The Volkswagen currywurst is back

  • 30 August 2023

Volkswagen, renowned for its cars, has an unusually popular product in its factory canteen in Wolfsburg: the VW currywurst. Ironically, over the past years, the company sold more of these curry sausages than cars, with a staggering number of about 7 million sausages per year. In 2021, Volkswagen decided to ban all meat products from the canteen, marking an end to the sale of their iconic currywurst. This decision stirred a significant uproar in Germany, with even former Chancellor Gerard Schröder expressing his dissatisfaction.

However, two years after this decision, amidst continued demand and popularity (amplified during the coronavirus pandemic when a delivery service for the sausage was set up), Volkswagen has decided to reintroduce the currywurst on the menu, alongside a vegan version. The VW currywurst even has an official part number, and a vegetarian variant has been available since 2010.

Timeline:

  • 1970s: Volkswagen starts producing curry sausages for its company canteens.
  • 2010: Volkswagen introduces a vegetarian version of the currywurst.
  • 2021: Volkswagen decides to ban all meat products from the canteen in Wolfsburg.
  • During the coronavirus pandemic: Volkswagen sets up a delivery service for the currywurst due to high demand from employees working from home.
  • 28 August 2023: Volkswagen announces the return of the currywurst to the canteen menu, due to its enduring demand and popularity.

Volkswagen's currywurst is an integral part of the company culture and remains a beloved product among both employees and the general public.
